Weiss 2017 Rangda and Durga in Bali

Sarah Weiss

This article examines Rangda and her role as a chthonic and mythological figure in Bali, particularly the way in which Rangda’s identity has intertwined with that of the Hindu goddess Durga—slayer of buffalo demons and other creatures that cannot be bested by Shiva or other male Hindugods. Images and stories about Durga in Bali are significantly different from those found in Hindu contexts in India. Although she retains the strong-willed independence and decision-making capabilities prominently associated with Durga in India, in Bali the goddess Durga is primarily associated with violent and negative attributes as well as looks and behaviours that are more usually associated with Kali in India. The reconstruction of Durga in Bali, in particular the integration of Durga with the figure of the witch Rangda, reflects the local importance of the dynamic relationship between good and bad, positive and negative forces in Bali. I suggest that Balinese representations of Rangda and Durga reveal a flux and transformation between good and evil, not simply one side of a balanced binary opposition. Transformation—here defined as the persistent movement between ritual purity and impurity—is a key element in the localization of the goddess Durga in Bali.

Rangda and Barong appear a lot in performing art, paintings, and tattoos in Bali. The sacred rituals involving the two creatures always attract attention—likewise forms of performances and crafts for tourists. Historically the existence of Rangda and Barong started from the text of Calon Arang, which initially came from the island of Java in Indonesia. This fact shows how the Balinese people attach themselves to myths and then develop them in creative works. The relationship between the narrative text and visualization will be the material to see what desires are behind their consciousness and unconsciousness in understanding the Calon Arang. There is an antagonistic offer on the characterizations and the creative process that perceives Calon Arang's story. The process of studying the object uses a qualitative method. In a time, observe and be directly involved in the Rangda and Barong ceremonies, see these figures' performances, visit markets and art galleries, and int...

Calon Arang Karya Pramoedya Ananta Toer dan Janda dari Jirah Karya co*k Sawitri : Kajian Intertekstual dan Postkolonial

Laga Adhi Dharma

Gadamerian Hermeneutics in an Artistic Process of Bedoyo-Legong Calonarang

It is important to rethink Indonesian dance creation within postmodern aesthetics, from which dance maker tends to present the forms of fusion in pursuing the “newness”. Encouraged by dialectic of Hans-Georg Gadamer, I believed that such specific manner is required to choreograph sufficient fusion forms in terms of Indonesian plurality. This research is to investigate the hermeneutic dimension of “Bedoyo-Legong Calonarang” as a dance piece that brings Javanese and Balinese classical idioms into Indonesia contemporary. I use the core motion of his hermeneutics to apply interpretative, holistic observation, and heuristics as well as philosophical qualitative method. Through identifying dialectical aspects in the conceptual sphere of artistic process and presentation of the dance, the result showed its merit to accommodate inter-subjective understanding in revitalizing traditional values.

Penokohan Rangda Dalam Novel Galau Putri Calon Arang Dan Janda Dari Jirah

2020 •

Abimardha Kurniawan

In the middle of 2000iest, there are two novels published that transformed from the famous Calon Arang narrative. They are Galau Putri Calon Arang (Syahrani and Yulyana, 2005) and Janda dari Jirah (Sawitri, 2007). Each work present the characterization of Rangda in different ways. The characterization aspects took as focuses in this article are (1) the character name of Rangda and (2) her genealogy. Through the comparative approach, also using the intertextuality principle, there are known that GPCA has still following the main tradition on its characterization, even it emphasizes that Rangda has a maternal relationship with Airlangga. On the contrary, JDJ gives a fresh interpretation. It stands for the massive tradition antithesis.
