🗝️ Key takeaways

  • It's an even better copycat of one of Texas's most iconic meals.
  • When you're looking for a grab-and-go breakfast food there's nothing better than a warm biscuit sandwich. I love this for busy mornings!

Imagine it's cold, rainy, and icky outside and you are cuddled in your favorite sweats watching Netflix.

All of a sudden... BOOM!!... you have a craving for Whataburger's honey butter chicken biscuit that can't be ignored.

The sweet, buttery flavor... the crunchy fried chicken... the steaming buttermilk biscuit...

No problem. With this recipe, you can make them at home in minutes. If you love the ones at Whataburger you'll definitely want to try these.

🧾 Ingredients

These chicken biscuits are so stupid easy to make! You'll find the full recipe ingredients and instructions in the green recipe card at the bottom of the page.

📖Variations

  • Make these with grilled chicken breasts
  • Use chicken thighs instead of chicken breast
  • Try these with the Hawaiian slider buns
  • Use a cold smoker to smoke the honey butter
  • If you live in Texas you can get Whataburger's honey butter sauce at many grocery stores... but honestly, this homemade recipe is easy and delicious.
  • Sometimes I like to make these with these air fryer boneless chicken thighs - so quick and easy.
  • If you can't find chipotle in adobo (usually in the Hispanic section at the grocery store) then ground chipotle will be fine - use about ¼ teaspoon or to taste.
  • Or, substitute a pinch of cayenne pepper for the chipotle.
  • Grilled chicken tenders are great on these biscuits, too!

I took a shortcut here and used frozen, breaded chicken strips from the store. I have also made chicken strips from scratch and used them.

My best advice is to do what you prefer and have time for!

  1. Microwave the honey and butter until the butter is melted.
  2. Stir in the vanilla and mashed chipotle.
  3. Pour into a jar and allow it to cool. Meanwhile, cook chicken.
  4. Spoon some of the cooled mixture on a biscuit, Place chicken breast on top, and add more butter if you like. Put the biscuit top on and enjoy.

You'll need plenty of napkins for this one!

🥫 How to store honey butter chicken biscuits

These store really well and you can even make them ahead of time.

Make ahead

You can make the biscuits and chicken sandwiches ahead of time, wrap in plastic wrap, then refrigerate them.

Or you can freeze in a ziploc or airtight container - then add the honey butter just before serving. If you add the honey butter before freezing sometimes it makes the buttermilk biscuit a little soggy.

I usually line the finished chicken biscuits up on a baking sheet and flash-freeze them before wrapping and final storage.

Refrigerate

The breakfast sandwiches will be fine in the refrigerator for up to 4 days as long as they're wrapped in plastic wrap or placed in an airtight container.

The honey butter should be refrigerated in a jar with a tight-fitting lid - and it will be fine for several weeks.

Freeze

Although it's best to freeze them without the honey butter sometimes you have leftovers that are already assembled.

Go ahead and wrap those in plastic wrap or put in an airtight container with parchment between the layers and freeze for up to 3 months.

They may get a teensy soggy but they'll still be delicious.

Reheat

To reheat just wrap in a paper towel and microwave until heated through. You can reheat these in the air fryer, too.

💭 Things to know

These honey butter chicken biscuits are so easy to make from scratch because you can make the sauce ahead of time and the rest is really just assembly.

Expert Tip: These can be pretty messy. Use extra long toothpicks to hold the biscuits together and have plenty of napkins ready.

  • I've used boneless honey BBQ wings, regular breaded tenders, BBQ tenders, and about every other flavor there is. Try different ones to see which you like best.
  • Use extra sauce! It's sooooo good.
  • Grilled chicken breast works well, too.
  • The number of servings you get will depend on how many pieces of chicken and biscuits you get from the package.
  • The spicy honey butter sauce can be made several days ahead of time and stored tightly covered in the refrigerator.
  • Sprinkle a little coarse ground black pepper on the top for extra zing.
  • Reheat leftovers in the microwave for about 1 minute.
  • The actual calories will vary depending on the ingredients you use.

Done is better than perfect

There are times I enjoy spending hours in the kitchen creating complex dishes. Those times are few and far between these days.

We're all busy. I don't want to traipse 30 minutes into Dallas to find an imported cheese for some crazy, fancy-pants appetizer recipe.

How about you?

There are lots of pretty good convenience foods out there. Learn to use them wisely to save yourself time and energy. Especially when it comes to parties and get-togethers.

The main thing is that your guests enjoy themselves, you enjoy yourself, and everyone leaves happy.

Whether it's football season, a family get-together, or the holidays we go through a lot of snacks around here. Here are some of our favorites.

  • Baked Brie with Apples and Bacon comes together easily and has just a few ingredients, but will have your guests swooning. Gooey, rich Brie, tangy apples, salty bacon…
  • Chicken Crescents are all creamy, gooey, cheesy, spicy perfection with cream cheese, chiles, and chicken. It's like an enchilada in one bite.
  • Spiced Apple and Ham Sliders are one of those recipes that you just keep going back to. Salty ham is folded onto a fluffy Cheddar cheese biscuit then topped with sweet spiced apple slices. A quick chipotle aioli gives the sandwich a little extra heat.

You'll want a few jars with lids to store your honey butter in. I usually make a lot and then store in several small jelly jars.

This is not a necessity but a vacuum sealer is a great tool that allows you to prep different foods and store safely in the refrigerator or freezer longer than normal.

📞 The last word

Whataburgers’ honey butter chicken biscuits are a favorite here and once you try this version they're bound to be a favorite with your family, too.

It's the perfect blend of honey, heat, and crispy chicken!
